Mathews, editor of the Arizona Daily Star for over forty years, was born in Kentucky, grew up in Indianapolis and attended the University of Illinois. He began his newspaper career at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1919 and purchased the Star in 1924. He contributed to magazines on international and military affairs and was the author of numerous articles written during his extensive travels abroad. He was active on the board of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Pulitzer Prize selection committee. He served on the Arizona State Board of Regents. He sought the Democratic nomination for Congress in 1940 but lost the election. He was married to Betty Boyers and he died in 1969.
