(And please check out the other beautifulpots that I have on eBay.) Youare bidding on a monumental vintage pitcher by the late legendary potter andeducator Val Cushing. DESCRIPTION: This monumental piece is an imposingmaster work that makes its presence felt in whatever setting it is placed. It has a two-tiered circular base from whichit expands into a voluminous wide-bellied body. The latter supports a conic neck with an inward angled rim and amasterfully executed pouring spout. Asignature Cushing arced handle that nicely accommodates four fingers completesthe pot. The decorative aspects of the pieceare equally compelling. The pitcher has a gorgeous speckled and mottled mustard glaze with shinohighlights around the neck. The body of the pot is further adorned with anallover pattern of raised circular nibs. Thisrare and highly collectible work stands 19” tall and measures an impressive 10”at its widest. It is in mint condition-no chips, cracks or repairs- and is signed “Val Cushing” and “ALFRED” in therecessed interior of the base. ABOUTVAL CUSHING: The late ValCushing is something of an icon in the annals of 20th Century Americanceramics. Examples of his work can be found in nearly every majorceramics book that has been published in the last 25 years (as well as in thepermanent collection of many prestigious museums.) Cushingretired after40 years of teaching ceramics at Alfred University, which is considered thepremier university in the United States for the study of ceramics. He was Professor Emeritus and much of Alfred's reputation is due to Cushing'sinfluence and guidance. Val Cushing is also highly respected (and widelycollected) on an international scale. Examplesof his work can be found in the permanent collections of many of the world’smost prestigious museums including the American Craft Museum, the RenwickGallery of the Smithsonian Institution, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, theInternational Museum of Ceramic Art in Japan, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and theOhi Museum of Ceramics.
