Original Description:

Pleasecheck out my 100% Positive feedback and bid with complete confidence.  (And please check out the other beautifulpots that I have on eBay.)                You are bidding on a rare mid-Century Modern rooster by highly laudedCalifornia ceramist James Lovera.                DESCRIPTION:  The body ofthis Eames Era rooster is heavy ...and granite-like with subtly distressed earthtoned surface markings that evoke those of fellow mid-Century ceramist ClaudeConover.  The bird’s head is unglazedearthenware. This fabulous rooster measures approximately 10” long and stands9” tall-  and is in excellent vintagecondition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It has the maker’s incised signature on the bottom.                   Please note:  There are some minorblack flecks on the rooster’s head.  I don’tknow if they are original to the piece or post-production.  I have made no attempt to remove them as theyare unobtrusive and of no consequence.                 Please note:  It appears as thougha plaster-like filling has been applied to the piece- as seen in the last photo.  I don’t know whether or not this was part ofthe production process (perhaps to balance the rooster).  It has no effect on the display of the piece.                This is a no reserve auction.                ABOUT JAMES LOVERA   Born in 1920, Lovera began his career in the mid-1940’s while working at the CaliforniaPottery Company in what is now Fremont.  He has always kept his forms simple, with the focus being on theglaze.  His glazes are drawn from naturalphenomena: a sleek or craggy stone, a decomposed leaf, nubbly tree bark andshale outcrippings are all a part of his artistic lexicon.  Lovera'sceramics were often shown in "Arts and Architecture" the ModernDesign and Modern Arctitcure magazine edited by Ray and Charles Eames and IsamuNoguchi, in the abstract Expressionist/Modern heyday in the 1950's.   Until his retirement in 1986 as ProfessorEmeritus, he taught ceramic art at California State University at SanJose.  James Lovera’s gracefully formedand uniquely glazed vessels are in galleries and private collections worldwide, including those in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the MintMuseums.                    SHIPPING:  Winning bidder pays for insured UPSGround or USPS Priority shipping. Winning New York bidder pays applicable state sales tax.  International shipping charge is $60.  Winning international bidders are responsiblefor any import taxes imposed by their particular country.  Payment via PAYPAL is due within five days ofthe end of the auction. THANKS forlooking and GOOD LUCK.
