Precious bible, what a treasure does the word of God affordAll I want for life or pleasure, food and med'cine, shield and swordLet the world account me poor having this I need no more
Food to which the world's a stranger, here my hungry soul enjoysOf excess there is no danger, though it fills, it never cloysOn a dying Christ I feed, he is meat and drink indeed
Shall I envy then the miser, doating on his golden store?Sure I am, or should be wiser, I am rich, 'tis he is poorJesus gives in his word food and med'cine, shield and sword
The left side of the verse is stitched with a flower basket, sheep, birds, fruit trees, floral urn, tree basket, fruit basket, dog and birds in flight. The right side is stitched with flower baskets, trees, butterfly, birds, fruit tree and a folly building surrounded by birds. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central triangle of strawberries which has a fruit tree plus bird and a rose basket on each side. There is a framework beneath the strawberries with a small floral motif to the right, a rose basket to the left and containing Ellen's details, those of her school - Castle Bromwich School - and the date of 1849. There is strip of grass on each side of the framework with sheep grazing on it. The grass to the right has a farmer and his dog standing on it with a tree arched over them, whilst his wife and her dog stand beneath a tree on the grass to the left. Each dog has a tree plus bird at their side then the whole piece is surrounded by a honeysuckle border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite brown with general, slightly darker vertical streaks. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ellen first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the gauze is damaged across the bottom edge which has caused some fraying. There is also an area of damage to the middle of the left edge, a split beneath Ellen's surname and a few smaller splits elsewhere. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 20 3/4" across x 21 1/2"
THE GAUZE IS SLIGHTLY BRITTLE ON THIS SAMPLER WHICH I THINK IS WHAT HAS CAUSED THE SPLITS. AS SUCH I WILL BE SHIPPING IT FLAT TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE AND WOULD ADVISE THAT HANDLING BE KEPT TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM UNTIL IT IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED.
