Austrocypraea contusa (McCoy, 1877) 24.8 mm Middle Miocene, Victoria, now available. Intact piece in overall excellent condition for this rarely offered species. Minor erosion to dorsum, but intact canals and superb, prominent teeth.
This is a particularly exquisite specimen of this rare form, which is far rarer than eximia, from which it is differentiated by its shorter teeth which do not extend as far onto the columellar side of the base, and occurring in very few locations.... Exhibiting gloss, a relatively uniform greyish brown patina, extremely well-developed margins and exceptionally well-defined, short teeth, this complete piece (with minor touch-ups to hairline cracks) is suitable for the most advanced fossil cowrie collection.
With no structural damage (shallow to very shallow marks only) and with the postero-lateral and lateral growth marks obtained in life, this fossil is top quality and the best offered of this form on SeaGems. Note the interesting lateral placement of the umbilicus relative to the posterior canal, a feature seen in comparatively few specimens. There is an exceedingly minor flake to the dorsal part of the anterior canal, otherwise the canals are perfect. A beautiful piece in superb condition.
