MINT UNUSED VINTAGE CUSTOM MADE HAND BRAIDED RAWHIDE
SMALL REATA / RIATA / LASSO / LARIAT / ROPE FOR CALF ROPING
WITH 2 COLOR LACING DECORATION AND LONG TAIL
This is a vintage 4 strand braided rawhide "piggin' string" (lariat, reata, riata, rope, lasso), used for calf roping; much like "bull dogging" where mounted cowboys chase down steers, rope them, then wrestle steers to the ground. Calf roping is similar, except cowboys tie 3 legs of the calf to complete the take down in order to be judged. This custom made hand braided piggin string, also known as a get down, is 5/16" diameter x 13' 8" long, with hand braided rawhide decorations with brown lacing patterns. This piece is supple, but because rawhide dries out over time and will retain the shape it has been in. Conditioning can be used to reshape the shape of the rawhide, if desired; however, this piece is in original, untouched condition. This has a nicely made 2" diameter hand braided rawhide honda (loop) with one end braided into a loop to accept the other end that has a 2 color zig zag pattern Turks head end knot that is secured by the end loop. The honda has fancy dark brown leather lacing reinforcement where the lariat would rub on the inside. The end of the reata is braided in a small circular pattern that secures the honda, and allows it to rotate. The end of the reata has a 2 1/4" hand braided tear drop decoration in an alternating rows of rawhide and brown lacing in zig zag patterns. Below this teardrop are 5 hand braided decorations; a center Turks head knot in two colors with a zig zag pattern, and 2 braided brown lacing collars above and below. The round rawhide braiding is 5/16" in diameter, and appears to be a 4 strand reata. However, the 6" long intact end tail is braided into 2 sections, one has 3 tails and the other 2 tails. It appears that the end tail has added another strand, but it is hard to tell, but looks like an original 5 strand braiding. The end tail pattern is the way that a rawhide braider "signs" his piece, and is his identifying mark. However, I have no idea who this braider is. I purchased this piece from a high end dealer at the High Noon show in Mesa Ariz. in 2013, and it was vintage then. This item is in mint, unused condition, and I can only guestimate it is around 25 years old. This small reata / roping string / get down / piggin' string has no damage, repairs or alterations, and could actually be used; but also would be perfect as a wall hanger, decorator piece, hang on your saddle horn or with a typical connecting loop to your saddle; or display in a Western, Old West, Cowboy, Cowgirl, roping, Vaquero, Equestrian display or conversation piece in an office, den or Man Cave.
