This is an Indonesian Wayang Golek rod puppet with a wooden stand.
He would have been brought back as a souvenir. The puppet theatres are really special and date back to medieval times.
There are five main character types. This one, with a white face, slightly upright head and small eyes that gaze forward, typifies a semi-refined character. I am sure he is male as the line above his lip is most probably a moustache, not lip definition.
While generally refined, thes...e characters are a bit more direct than the purely refined characters and more inclined toward precipitous actions.He is 27 inches tall to the bottom of his skirt from the top of his head. He is 19 inches tall if you are only measuring to the bottom of the rod, (20 1/2 to the bottom of his stand)
His strings for his joints are all intact, his head moves when you turn his rod. The clothes are in lovely condition (see pictures).
There are one or two chips to the paint on his head & neck and one or two small surface marks, as you will see from the pictures.
The rods are complete. The stand is in good condition.
