You are bidding on an Edward vom Hofe Model 521 Star Special. It is a size 6/0. The serial number is A771 placing the manufacture of this reel in 1908. This reel first appeared in the 1907 vom Hofe catalog and was intended for striped bass, tarpon and tuna. It is made of hard rubber and German silver. In 1918 the 521 was dropped from the catalogs and replaced by Edward vom Hofe's famous 621 Universal Star.
These do not come up very often. This one... is in very nice condition and is functionally flawless. It doesn't seem as if it has seen much actual fishing action. The side plates have faded into a medium/dark brown. The ebonite has no cracks, chips or damage. The German silver is immaculate. The screw heads are pristine. Original leather brake pad. Unaltered original foot. No corrosion anywhere.
