The dial
Beautiful large white enamel dial, which is very clear with black Roman numerals, split minutes around the edge of the dial with a black diamond marking at quarter hour intervals. The dial is signed ‘J. W. Benson’. (This famous English family firm of watchmakers, whose full name is ‘James William Ben...son’, used to practise watch making between 1849-1973 and produced high quality watches. Benson himself made watches for the Royal family and Queen Victoria.) In the bottom of the dial is written: “Swiss Made”. The dial has sunken second subsidiary, gold spade hour, minute and second hands. The dial and the hands are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. New crystal glass has fitted.
The case
An attractive solid silver plain case. The pendant is at 12 o’clock position and the hinges for the back cover, front bezel and the dust cover are at 6 o’clock position. The solid silver case is hallmarked for London 1937, with the capital letter “B”. Inside the back cover it is numbered ‘680377’ and has the case maker’s initials ‘J.W.B.’, which stand for ‘J W Benson’. All those hallmarks, number and the maker’s initials are present inside the dust cover. Inside the dust cover is inscribed ‘Made in England’. The case is in very good condition, with no damage, but there are a few little scratches on the back cover. Hinges are tight and are in excellent condition and working order.
The movement
Beautiful high quality gilded brass movement. It has a lever escapement wheel with ruby endstone balance wheel. The movement is signed ‘J. W. Benson, Swiss Made, 15 jewels’. The mechanical condition is excellent. The movement has been cleaned, serviced and oiled and is in excellent working order and keeps excellent time. New main spring has fitted. The watch measures 50 mm approx.
All in all, this is a beautiful solid silver open face pocket watch by a very famous watchmaker. It is in excellent condition and working order.
