ID’d Civil War CDV BrevetColonel Jacob Ford Kent, later General at San Juan Hill, GUTEKUNSTEarly photograph in Major General Jacob Fort Kent’s militarycareer.  He stands, formally dressed with muttonchops, holding cane and gloves.     Inscription: "Jacob Ford Kent, taken in 1865". I will email winner a file with a little bit more of my research. Jacob Ford Kent: Early life and theAmerican Civil WarKent was born in 1835in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Rodolp...hus Kent and Sarah Deily. HisGreat-Great-Grandfather was Col. Jacob Ford, of Morristown, NJ (whose home wasGeneral George Washington's headquarters 1779–80). He attended the UnitedStates Military Academy at West Point.He graduated in 1861 and served in the Union army during the Civil War.[1] Hewas first appointed to the 3rd U.S.Infantry in 1861 and later transferred to staff duty as an assistant inspector general in 1863.Kent won brevet promotions during the war for "gallant and meritorious service" at the battles of Marye's Heights, Spotsylvania andPetersburg. He ended the war as a brevet colonel assistant inspectorgeneral.[2]Indian WarsFollowing the CivilWar Kent returned to field duty with the 3rd U.S. Infantry with the rank ofcaptain. He served on the frontier in Montana, Colorado and Nebraska. In 1885Kent was promoted to major of the 4th U.S. Infantry and stationed at FortOmaha. While he was posted in Nebraska the Ghost Dance War took placeculminating in the Wounded Knee Massacre. Major Kent and Captain Frank D.Baldwin were placed in charge of charge of the Wounded Knee investigation byMajor General Nelson A. Miles.[3]Spanish–American Warand later lifeWhen war with Spainbegan in May 1898, Kent was appointed brigadier general of volunteers andassumed command of the First Division of the Fifth Army Corps, destined forCuba.[1] His forces landed at Daiquirí and at the Battle of San Juan Hill hisdivision led the main attack on San Juan Hill while the Rough Riders led theattack on nearby Kettle Hill. Kent's division sustained heavy casualties duringthe assault: Hamilton S. Hawkins, commanding the First Brigade, was severelywounded[4] and Colonel Charles A. Wikoff, commanding the Third Brigade, waskilled; within half an hour, three more officers were to assume command of thelatter brigade.[1] However U.S. forces took the heights and Kent's divisionparticipated in the subsequent Siege of Santiago.[1] He was appointed brigadiergeneral in the Regular Army in October, 1898. He was transferred to thePhilippines where he briefly served before he retired late in 1898. The growth of the business meant that it wastime for a larger space, and in 1864 Gutekunst moved a few doors up Arch St. tonumber 712, and occupied the whole building.
