On offer is this splendid example of a pre-Civil War, EARLY "Roussel's Unrivalled Premium Shaving Cream" jar, or "pot lid" as they are more commonly referred to!  As seen, on the face of the lid, the address is the early address for this Company, 114 Chestnut St, PHILADELPHIA (see history below)  This is also a flat-top lid, which was customarily used before the "domed-top" lids replaced them. The transfer strike on this lid is very strong and clear. The lid has a diameter of ...3 1/4" and stands 1 3/4" tall when the lid is in place on the base section.
A really nice piece all-round! Super piece to add to a collection of pot lids OR Shaving ephemera!
HISTORY:    EUGENE ROUSSEL......Born on October 25, 1816 - Morchain, 80190, Somme, Picardie, FRANCE.
Deceased 26 April 1888 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, ageat death: 71 years old
Buried on April 30, 1888 - Laurel Hill cemetery -, Pennsylvania, USA.
He was the second in a family of 11 children. His father was wheelwright(repairer and manufacturer of wooden wheels for wagons) .He had to go to PARISto work. That's where he knew his handsome brother ROUSELL, ROUSSEL .
They then emigrated to the United States.
In the 1800s, Philadelphia served as a hub for manufacturers of perfumes, soapsand ointments. Edwin T. Feedley wrote in "Philadelphia and ItsManufacturers" that the city's perfumers were "unrivaled" and"the greatest in the world". Eugene Roussel was a major manufacturerof perfumes and later sodas. Xavier Bazin was first director of the Roussellaboratory from 1840 to 1849, when he became the owner of the company. EugeneRoussel arrived in Philadelphia in 1838. He immediately set up a perfumerywhere he made soaps and luxury toiletries, as well as a fountain of mineralwater. Xavier Bazin bought the perfumery business from Roussel when Roussel wanted to focuson his mineral water business. Bazin continued to use the Roussel name until1853. The Bazin family owned the company until 1884. In 1857, Bazin changed hisaddress to 17 S. 5th street. There he continued to have great success with hisperfume shops, especially his shaving creams. These Bazin products were placedin richly decorated pots, whose lids are very valuable to collectors today. Thisparticular type of pot was used between 1840 and 1920 to market variousproducts presented in the form of paste. After WW1, they have become obsoleteas they have been replaced by more modern and economical packaging. After Roussel sold his business to Bazin, he became an important figure in thebottling industry. Between 1840 and 1844, bottlers exploded, largely because ofthe craze for bottled soda and Eugene Roussel mineral waters; in 1838 or 1839, Roussel bottled the first water of baking soda, with a lemony taste. Heinnovated in the taste and quality of bottled water using his training in aParisian perfumery and laboratory to invent tasty recipes, without any of themedicinal or sweet qualities of soda water of the time. The craze he createdwas so great that the public demand in bottles triggered the reopening of theclosed factories of Dyottville in 1842. Roussel was said to be the first toflavor its waters with fruit juices or the first to bottle soda water.Condition: For condition reportplease see "Item specifics/Seller notes" above and check out all thepics as they form an important part of the overall description.FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESEDELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TOMARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM.
