c.1720s BEAUTIFUL AND UNUSUAL SPITALFIELDS GOLD FLORAL POLYCHROME SILK PANELFrom Dress - Open Robe or Robe a l´Anglaise
DESCRIPTION:
Artist/Maker: Place oforigin: Spitalfields, London - England (made, designed)Date: c.1720-30Artist/Maker:Unknown (production)Materialsand Techniques: Brocaded silk / lampasProvenance:Important European Private Collection, Paris (France) A rare large /long fragment or panel of stunning and scarce light goldenyellow and polychrome flowers London Spitalfields Silk lampas, dating from circa1720-30 removed from a “robe a l´Anglaise”.This panel was acquired from an important Parisian Textile Collectionsome time ago and according to the collector, the textile was most probablytaken from the original gown, rather than being unused due to the fact thatshows normal wear, natural fading .no discoloration- and features 2 lovely patches of similar floral silk fabric sewn in the period or a little later, which adds tons of charm to the piece!, andthis has arrived to our hands in such great condition as its original ownerleft it in the mid 1700s. Elegant fabrics like this exhibited wealth and taste in the 18th century.In this period, textiles and clothing were a form of investment that could besold readily for cash if necessary or gifted to the church. This silk fabric was, definitely, a significant investment.I´velovingly called this panel “LE FOULARD”because of its shape and good length, and also because it is a soft, mediumweight silk textile with an opulent and stylishpattern brocaded that, apart from being a very tasteful choice for the mostexquisite Court gown, one can imagine it as a scarf, neck or shoulder trim aswell. The brocade or pattern is subtly woven in fine silk floss in a wonderfulvariety of pastel colors on a ground of double rich and very smooth texture. Theground is a nice rare golden ochre yellow color, shiny and very soft, thatchanges depending on the light and angle, fully covered of large scaled flowersand leaves in shades of light ochre or off white, Prussian Blue, mustard yellowand frog green. The panel consists of two pieces of silk cloth, interwoven only wherethe pattern appears and matches better. Both pieces feature a patch to cover amissing or broken area. This is undoubtedly the work of a skilled seamstress orneedlewoman, or even, a nun.The panelis asymmetrically cut to one end. The finish and surface is a little opened, that´s the weft, due to age and craftmanship, but it is super beautiful andunusual

Antique condition sold as is for referencepurposes or projects/ re working. This is a stunning find for archive, study, display, enjoy and even reuse. It is truly a rare and wonderful piece of early textileart. It needs to be carefully preserved by storing flat and away from sunlight, insects and humidity. The textile would look great framed as well.Unlined.*Please, study the photos as these form part of our description. If youneed additional pictures, we will be pleased to provide more. CONDITION: The panel has survived in Very Good Condition keeping in mindit is well over 250 years old. The silk is still wonderfully strong and clean. Normaluse, no stains, no rust. There are two areas of fraying -see pictures-, thesemay be stabilized or patched to avoid more damages, although the fabric and fibersare strong. Wear to fabric along edges. Colors are very good, there is slight natural fading dueto the passage of time. Very interesting and attractive textile if you are looking for the unusual, the beauty of a gorgeous "decadent but regal" textile non in perfect condition but almost.... Please, See Pictures Carefully.MEASURES:  82 ½” LONG X 11” WIDE
