Mr. Roussel, had many different bottle molds from the early pontil type to the soda type molds in the late 184...0's. This mold was used in 1846 only. To learn more read the below history from his landing in the U.S.A., to bottling soda water, one of the pioneers. Bottle is not dug and has very minor wear if any. The only issue that keeps it from being in mint condition is a small open bubble on the right side nice(see my scan), Cobalt blue, Iron Pontil and has the early umbrella type lip. A 1846 example of an early soda from the man who started the bottling water on a grand scale. Also see the Green Roussel I have listed. Roussel came to Philadelphia from France in 1838and immediately set up a perfume shop on Chestnut Street. At this location heserved and bottled mineral waters. He is credited with producing the firstflavored soda waters in this country, but I have seen evidence that most sodawater fountains of that day added fruit juices to their product. Rousselclaimed to provide his artificially charged waters on the French plan. At thistime, he also introduced a new bottle for his product, this form is called theearly pontil shape soda, (See this example in my scans.) By 1845, Roussel was advertising about all of hisimitators and how he was forced to change the color and style of his bottles sothat the public would easily recognize his product. It was in this year thatthe soda shape wascreated. It was also at this time that Roussel first used cobalt glass for hissoda water bottles and collectors today thank him. Soon everyone was using thesoda shape and blue bottles. By 1847 there weat least nine competitors to Roussel in Philadelphia and by 1850, there weretwenty.
