Antique Japanese Meiji Period 14k White Gold & Carved Angel Skin Coral Brooch / Sash Clip
Measures: 2.3" Inches Long by 1.38" WideTotal Weight: 17.61 Grams
For sale we have an absolutely magnificent Japanese carved coral brooch. This brooch is in surprisingly excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or areas of concern to the coral or gold. The intricately carved angel skin coral was done by an expert craftsman and it is of the highest quality. ...; The natural coral is being held in place by a 14k white gold backing (tested), which is only signed "S.P.M." for the maker, which I haven't been able to identify yet. The wheel and end to the backing are made of silver, while I don't believe the actual bar to be a precious metal, so its more than likely that the brooch bar was added at a later date (probably 1940's). I've seen a couple others that also had new backings added around this time period. I believe this piece dates to the late 19th century, or early 20th century, and they were originally made as sash clips (or obidome) for okimonos. I have found a couple similar carved coral pieces that are also marked SPM, selling well into the thousands. This is definitely one of the nicest carved coral brooches I have come across, and it is in perfect condition.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, thanks!
