Antique 19th Century German Volkstedt Porcelain Dresden Cherub Figurine Group
Item History & Price
It is superbly modelled and painted and the expressions on the faces of the cherubs are really sweet. One of the cherubs is holding a garland of flowers which makes me think this is an allegory of love with the little angels serenading a courting couple perhaps?
Inevitably with a porcelain figurine of this age... and fineness, there are a few losses: one finger of the topmost putti holding the garland is missing; the little finger and one of the pipes of the cherub playing the bagpipes(?) and the tip of the wing on one of the turtledoves, but that is all I can see.
The back stamp is for Volkstedt porcelain factory in Rudolstadt, Thringia Gemany.
The Volkstedt porcelain factory was sited in Rudolstadt, Thuringia Germany. Volkstedt was a soft-paste porcelain factory started in 1760 by Georg Heinrich Macheleid at Volkstedt, Thuringia and was the earliest porcelain manufacturer in Thuringia. I believe this figurine to date from the latter half of the 19th century around about 1890.
