This listing is for a Palais Royal novelty opaline glass egg shaped ormolu mounted thimble holder. The opaline glass insert is a soft celadon green color with a ribbed exterior and is mounted in a dainty ormolu frame. This novelty thimble holder dates from the Grand Tour era in the last quarter of the 19th Century.
Measures 3" high, 2 3/4" long and 1 7/8" deep. Weighs 1.9 ounces.
This lovely thimble holder is in excellent Esta...te condition with no noted flaws although there is slight wear to the metal finish and some possible misshapen ormolu from normal handling.
Novelty vanity items were popular at shops on the Palais Royal when wealthy travelers visited Paris during the Grand Tour era and were often purchased as souvenirs. This miniature ormolu thimble holder is a wonderful example of such items.
