ILLUMINATED MUSIC on a 5 LINE STAVE –

IM-11097: (555 x 385mm – 217/8 x 15 1/8'') Original leaf from a manuscript Spanish Antiphonalon animal parchment.  The manuscript textand music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) ...were beautifully executed by hand over450 years ago!!!Scribed and illuminated in Spain, c. 1550.  The parent Choirbook oncebelonged to the Convent of San Pedro Regalado de la Aguilera, and was likelyscribed there. Thisleaf has one large illuminated initial in blue with intricate red penwork, and onelarge illuminated initial in red with delicate blue penwork. Thetext and music continue the Common of a Confessor.  The illuminated''R'' begins ''Regem confessorum...'' (The Lord, the confessors' King, come, let us adore). The second illuminated''R'' repeats:  ''Regemconfessorum...'' (The Lord, the confessors' King, come let us adore).   The leaf originates from Spain, c. 1550, and is from a known Spanish convent. This is an original, not a reproduction, and its condition is shown in the photos. As is usual with Medieval and Renaissance parchment, the hair side of the leaf is darker than the flesh side, but may take ink somewhat better.  The differences in tone caused scribes to arrange their quires so that the hair side of one sheet faced the hair side of the next, and the flesh side faced the flesh side. There is devotional wear, staining, and some rippling to the parchment on this leaf. Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.   This leaf comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
