Scarce C. 1900 - 1930 EDWARD Vom HOFE " No. 5 " 6 ', 1 - Piece Greenheart Salt Water Rod
Item History & Price
Up for auction a Nice and somewhat Scarce 1900-1930 EDWARD Vom HOFE CO. "No.5" 6 FT., ONE-PIECE GREENHEART (WOOD) SALT WATER HEAVY TROLLING ROD WITH DETACHABLE HANDLE & CANVAS BAG. Likely made by Edward Vom Hofe during the first part of the last century, although dating his rods can be tough bec...ause he used seamed & soldered hardware longer than most other makers. The reel seat is stamped "No.5", while the butt cap reads "EDW. vom HOFE & CO. MAKERS". The guides are both stamped "E. Vom HOFE, N.Y.". Made with nice greenheart, all seamed & soldered German silver hardware and comes equipped with detachable handle (what Vom Hofe called their "No.5 "A" Quality Independent Butt"), one set of double Bell guides, stirrup-style tip top (which I believe is a replacement), spiked & hand-welted ferrules, exposed winding check, n/s butt cap, sliding band reel seat, rattan & silk wrapped grip & foregrip and wound in black silk tipped in red. Rod is in Very Good condition, showing light to moderate wear. The seam on the winding check has split, but the check remains solid and secure. The wooden tip is excellent and is arrow-straight, not often found in greenheart trolling rods. Varnish appears new and is superb. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules and butt cap are very nice. Reel seat works perfectly, with bold stampings. The rattan and silk-wound grip and fore grip are in Very Fine condition. Put up in a non-original canvas bag that offers some level of protection. A nice early example from this famous New York maker. To be sold with a very low starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $22.00 shipping via U.S. Priority Mail, with full insurance and tracking. Again, there can be no international shipping for this rod. Payment must be received within 5 days of auction closure. Thanks for your time and good luck.
