Estate item: Exact age unknown Brought to US in 1960s. or 70s This puppet was never displayed andwas stored away in a protective container. The colors are fantastic.
In original condition with no damage, or issues THIS EXQUISITE WAYANG OR SHADOW PUPPET FIGURE WASPURCHASED IN INDONESIA . MADE FROM YOUNG BUFFALO HIDE THAT IS CURED FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS. THE FIGURES ARE THEN CUT OUT, PIERCED, AND CARV...ED TOREPRESENT THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE, DRESS AND ORNAMENTATION OF THE INDIVIDUALCHARACTERS IN THE STORIES OF THE RAMAYANA. INTRICALLY PAINTED IN BRIGHT COLORS. THE FIGURES ARE HELD AND MANIPULATED BY THEPUPPET MASTER OR 'DALANG' THROUGH THE BUFFALO HORN WAYANG STICKS WHICH AREPRECISELY MOLDED TO FIT EACH FIGURE. A LARGE PUPPET FIGURE LIKE THESE SOMETIMESTAKES MONTHS TO PRODUCE.THE PUPPET FIGURE MEASURES 11-1/2”FROM THE TOP OF THE HEAD TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOT.
