Antique Bandoneon Alfred Arnold AA
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:59265992 | Time Period Manufactured: Pre-1930 |
Original/Reproduction: Original |
Up for sale is a very pretty Antique Bandoneon dating from the 1920's or 1920's. Manufactured in Germany. This Bandoneon was manufactured by the Alfred Arnold company and is the collectable AA model. The stamp inside the case and on the outside of the case indicates it was manufactured by AA but I could not find a date stamp. I am uncertain of the build date but from the engraving I would have thought late 1920's to 1930's but could be older?
There are 33 RH ...buttons and 24 LH buttons making this a 108 button (54 note) diatonic Bandoneon. The sound plate says "A". The keyboard is based on the Rheine (Argentine) keyboard system. This Bandoneon comes from a collection in a smoke free household. The reed plates are Aluminum. Bellows are 8/10 and are a very pretty Rainbow Blue/Green color and not really faded. All original buttons function and play, but some notes might need to be cleaned/ slightly tuned if you are very fussy. Some valves tend to stick open. A few leather valves have been replaced but most appear to be original. All valves are present. A few valves look tired but this is a very easy fix to replace the leather valves. This Bandoneon is in original unrestored original condition and with only a bit of attention would make a great player, practice instrument or addition to a collection. Some original buttons have their mother of pearl missing and are a quite beat up. A restoration would benefit from new buttons and valve leathers. 7/8 corner lyras are present - 1 is missing. The case is a medium rosewood color and in average condition with a few darker areas from being handled and a few chips, normal wear and such. It would look great in your Tango studio. Stripped and refinished this would be a very nice instrument. The sound grill is solid but shows some handling wear.
A few cracks in the sound board were carefully repaired with carpenters glue so the sound boards are quite good now. I had a button or two fall off and they were carefully glued back in place. The leather straps are decent. One sound board shows a very old crack repair which is still solid but must have been completed many decades ago and looks obvious due to the different colored filler use, but is still a good repair. The dark line on the sound board is the color of the wood grain at that area and not a crack.
Please note you are bidding on an instrument approaching 100 years old. It is not new and has the usual wear and tear for an antique instrument. There is an old Bandoneon case included with the Bandoneon, it is a bit beat up but fits well inside the old case. The latch is broken and the case is rough but will protect the Bandoneon in transit. The body is rosewood with some normal wear and tear, but otherwise intact on the instrument with no major damage. All buttons and valves present albeit should be replaced/repaired. This Bandoneon is in average condition compared to many out there including others in my collection of 30 or more.
This was on my list to be restored, but the list is to long, so I have decided to down size by collection. My loss is your gain, as these instruments are getting difficult to find - especially AA with the Rheine (Argentine) keyboard. Included will be the used Bandoneon case.
I prefer to ship Purolator and can only ship week days. Contact for a more accurate freight quote as the calculator does not work well and just to be sure. I am away most weekends so might not answer inquiries until the next business day. It will be carefully wrapped and packaged for transit.
