Jay Lovestone was in Chicago in May, of 1924, employed by the Daily Worker, a newspaper published by the Communist Party USA. The Daily Worker started January, 1924 and remained in print until 1958. This pass is rare, unique, & desirable for many reason. I've kept an eye on Chicago Police items on eBay for over a decade, & I’ve NEVER seen another "Reporter's Pass" of this kind - ever. You will not find another, especially with the name/signature of a significant figure in 20th century American History! The front of the Reporter's Pass says:The Bearer [Jay Lovestone] employed by the [Daily Worker] is entitled to pass Police Lines wherever formed to obtain news for the press, subject to conditions on back. The back says:The holder hereof assumes all risk of accidents and expressly agrees to abide by all orders or directions given him by such Police Officer as may be in charge of the lines where the holder of ticket is present. Jay Lovestone is a fascinating character in American history. He defied Stalin and lived to tell about it! He literally had to sneak out of Russia with forged papers. Mr. Lovestone's papers are archived at Stanford University.
For conditions, please review photos closely. For a nearly 94-year-old paper/cardboard press pass, this is in remarkably excellent shape. All writing, including signature, are completely legible. According to a 1999 article, Lovestone was a founding member of the Communist party in the United States, a force to be reckoned with in George Meany's American Federation of Labor (AFL), and an agent in James Angleton's CIA counter-intelligence division. Lovestone led one of the most fascinating American lives of this century. Born in 1898, Jay Lovestone was a Jewish boy from New York's East Side, a graduate of City College, and a radical who rose by age 29, to be secretary of the Communist Party USA. On a trip to Russia in 1929 for a "Communist International" meeting, however, he had the audacity to show independence, arguing against Stalin the Bolshevik revolutionary strategy was doomed to fail in the US, a country with no Socialist tradition. For this heresy of an "American exceptionalism" that seemed to exempt the United States from Marxist-Leninist determinism, he was promptly deposed as secretary and expelled from the party. He was lucky to get out of Moscow alive. One of the most fascinating chapters in Morgan's biography is the hitherto untold story of Louise Page Morris, the Boston debutante, fashion model, and CIA Mata Hari who teamed up with Lovestone to spy on the Communists. Lovers for almost 30 years, they always maintained separate apartments -- which was fine with "Pagey, " who also conducted affairs with U.N. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and OSS Director Wild Bill Donovan. Lovestone lived long enough to see the 1989 collapse of the Soviet Empire he had fought, dying on March 7, 1990, at the age of ninety-one.
