I , as many others admired Peter Throckmorton, Father of Marine Archaeology, and read all his books. In the 1980's, I was Chairman of a Marine Archaeology Council in Ft. Lauderdale that had a permit from the state of Florida to do an excavation and study of an historic shipwreck site, the GIL BLAS, an 1835 wreck important to local History.I telephoned Peter Throckmorton, invited him to be our archaeologist, he accepted and moved to Florida, part of each year.. He became my friend and m...entor. After 2 Shipwreck Symposiums and 2 summers of excavation and shipwreck research, he taught a course in Marine Archaeology at Nova Oceanographic University, which I took. When he passed away, I was left this footlocker, which he apparently took with him as he moved and traveled for his diving and other gear. His name, stenciled on the top is still partially readable, as is the military number on the end.He must have painted it yellow at some time, probably for shipboard visibility, but most of that has flaked away, leaving the army drab green. Note, The Throckmorton name seems on top of the yellow, so I do not know if he had this when he was in Hawaii, where he first began diving on shipwrecks, or it is from a later time in his adventurous life. I have a copy of an unpublished manuscript, which gave some of his early history, which I will consult to try to determine that. The top part is in good condition, but bottom is in poor condition with some termite damage.it should probably be put in a freezer to eliminate any remaining termite presence, and needs to be restored. It DID belong to Peter Throckmorton, however, so is well worth restoring. It is my hope that a friend or someone he knew and inspired buys this, perhaps to donate to a museum. The only known museum exhibit dedicated to Peter Throckmorton is an 1800 anchor in Ft.Lauderdale with a bronze plaque with his name, which our group erected..The last 2 photos are of Peter at the Helm of Sea Cloud, and one in conversation with Dimitri Rebikoff, the Genius inventor who taught Jacques Cousteau underwater photography. I am in the center, between Peter and Dimitri. Please inquire 1954JAGUARS , or 1954JAGPART . I ship Fedex in the US....Overseas rate given is to MIAMI FLORIDA, for those who have an agent there.
