Original Description:
Vintage pair of 1945 Rookwood Rook Bookends Artist signed by McDonaldMade in 1945, over 71 years old and this color is extremely rare (read below)!See original sticker on the back of 1 of the bookends signifying authenticity from the city that Rookwood Pottery originated from (Cincinnati, Ohio).Rare light blue color.
Marie Longworth Nichols (from Cincinnati, Ohio), founded Rookwood Pottery in 1880. During the early years, the pottery was not financ...ially successful but was supported by the Nichol's family wealth. Over the years, they employed numerous artists to paint and design their wares. One of the most recognizable Rookwood pottery ever that was ever produced is the Rook and was the mascot of Rookwood pottery. Each Rook bookend was designed and signed by William McDonald. The glaze on these rare Rook bookends is known as Blue Turquoise Matte, and there were not many of this exact color (light blue) made in 1945 due to William McDonald's declining health. These rooks are each perched on top of a rock among waves. These display well from all angles and are perfect for your mantle.  Each bookend bottom has XLV which marks the year it was manufactured. Any non-perfections are from the firing/manufacturing process including glaze misses and glaze pops. Authentic and marked appropriately with the Rookwood logo and shape. This a very rare set of art pottery bookends made by The Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati, Ohio (see ORIGINAL STICKER on bottom of 1 of the bookends which verifies these are from Cincinnati (see picture). These bookends have some size to them as they each stand approximately 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/4" wide and 3 3/8" deep. The bookends depict a Rook with its back against foliage with berries hanging from the branches. The glaze is a Blue Turquiose Matte and the detail is wonderful. You can see great detail in the feet attached to the platform it stands on as well as the foliage, berries and leaves in the background. The back of each is flat as to sit against and hold back books. These bookends are quite heavy as each one weighs in at a little over 2 lbs and 12 ounces each. These bookends are considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The beak on the Rooks is perfect and have never been repaired. Each Bookend is signed on the underside bottom with Rookwood's impressed reverse "RP" sunburst logo along with the Roman numerals "XLV" for the year of manufacture, 1945 and form number 2275. The bookends are also artist signed by William P. McDonald as his cipher is on the back right side in the middle of each bookend. Both artist's signatures can clearly be seen in the middle right side of the back of each bookend. These bookends have always traveled together as an original set. These are an outstanding example of both the form and glaze. Own a piece of history today with your investment of these rare and beautiful exclusive bookends! Please view all pictures as they offer the best description.
