Early 19th century sampler by Isabella Oliphant aged 7. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840. Worked in wool on a fine cotton gauze, this sampler, possibly Scottish, is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Isabella was just seven years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen of the linen is stitched in red and green with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, w...hilst the middle section contains a row of fine crowns with sets of family initials beneath. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree with an open tailed peacock to the left and right, a fruit basket above each and a set of family initials at their side. This section of stitch work is then underlined with a meandering floral border which has Isabella's name and age running across the bottom edge. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some areas of staining. The colours of the wool are good with a few small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Isabella first stitched it.Measures 9" x 15 3/4"This sampler also came with a unique and fascinating piece of Oliphant family history in the form of a hand engraved bottle. The neck of the bottle is engraved with a band pattern with a bird in flight and a cross below on what is presumably the front of the bottle. There is a pair of crossed flags beneath the cross with a crown above them, the words - 1888 Married - beneath with the name of Janet Oliphant contained within a curved band. Janet's name has a thistle beneath with a leafy bush to its left and right. The reverse of the bottle has some sort of stand or pedestal engraved on it which surrounds the greeting Happy New Year and has a tree standing on it with a bird on top and what looks like a fish just beneath the foliage. The bottom is in good condition with a couple of old smooth chips along its base, just by the thistle and stands at just under twelve inches high.I MUST APOLOGISE FOR THE POOR QUALITY IMAGES OF THE BOTTLE BUT I FOUND IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PHOTOGRAPH.
