You arebidding on a large 1959 museum quality bowl by the late renownedpotter and glaze master Harding Black. DESCRIPTION: ...; This magnificent mid-Century bowl finds HardingBlack at the peak of his ceramic prowess. In keeping with the potter’s methodology, a lovely simple form serves asa canvas for a stunning display of complex glaze wizardry. Thevoluminous interior of the bowl has a gorgeous glassy deep purple glaze. The latter provides a “canvas” for thebillowy blue and milky white rays that emanate forth from a jaw-droppinglybeautiful iridescent circular blue “cloud”. There is a milky white “eye” at the center of this artful “storm” andall of this is nicely framed by a chestnut brown rim. Theunderside of the bowl is equally stunning- decorated as it is with dappledblue, white and purple tones. This museum worthy bowl measures 12 1/4” in diameter and stands just under 3”high at the rim. It is in mintcondition- no chips, cracks or repairs- and is signed and dated (1959) on therecessed interior of the beautifully proportioned foot ring. This is a no reserve auction. ABOUT HARDING BLACK: The late Harding Black spent over 60 yearsthrowing pots and making ceramic pieces in San Antonio, Texas. He is best known for his beautiful glazes andis considered by many to be a ceramics pioneer and one of the significanthistorical figures in 20th century American ceramics. He was self-taught and devoted his life toresearching the science of glaze technology. Mr. Black was able to discover the methods to duplicate many historicalglazes, including the ancient Chinese glazes, such as chun, flambé, oxblood andoil spot.
