Attica, Athens AR Tetradrachm.
Late ‘Transitional’ Issue. Circa 454-404 BC
AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 17.17 g, 8h).
Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right, with frontal eye.
Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square.
Reference: Kroll 8; HGC 4, 1597
Comments On This Specimen: Beau...tiful style, well struck and has original mint luster. Masterpiece.
Additional Comments: Although this tetradrachm depicts an owl with its three tail feathers in a single prong, which technically places it among the “mass coinage” issues dated 454-404 BC, the very lifelike owl with the attributes of the slightly tilted head of the owl places it very close to Starr’s Group V, struck circa 460-454 BC.
