Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:9925698 | Country/Region of Manufacture: United States |
Circulated/Uncirculated: Uncirculated |
Struck in 1965 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coke Convention, according to "A Reference Guide For Collectors of So-Called Slugs and Facsimiles" by T.J. Jankovsky. It was professionally graded and slabbed by NGC (MS65 Gem Mint!). It appears to have been struck by the Coca Cola bottle collectors club.
Obverse: A facsimile of the obverse of the famous 1915-S $50 Panama Pacific Exposition commemorative gold piece.
Reverse: A loose facsimile of the reverse of the famous 1...915-S $50 Panama Pacific Exposition commemorative gold piece, with Coca Cola Bottling Convention tied in. According to the February 2013 on line edition of Coin World, the reverse owl design is taken from a circa 1906 celluloid bookmark that was issued as an advertising piece by the Coca Cola Company. They also said the company archivist says the medal is a fantasy piece and not an official release.
You will see these medals offered as genuine 1915 Panama Pacific issued medals. Some even offer it with a case stamped 1915 Convention USA. However, given the reverse design dates from 1906, it's doubtful these pieces are really from 1915.
If you collect the 1915 Panama Pacific commemorative coins (50c silver, $1 gold, $2.50 gold, $50 gold) this would make a nice place holder for the $50 piece.
