This auction is for one bulb of a recently-described species of Phaedranassa from eastern Ecuador. The genus Phaedranassa includes 10 species, seven of which are found only in Ecuador. The newest species, P. cuencana, recently discovered in eastern Ecuador and described in 2015. Phaedranassa are not common in cultivation, and, to my knowledge, P. cuencana has not previously been available for sale. Hippeastrum parodii is a rare yellow flowering Hippeastrum native to Bolivia and Argentina. It is a difficult plant to grow and flower - when it can be found.H. parodii - GERMA is a hybrid and as such is much easier to grow. Like many hybrids it will not produce seed but offsets steadily with time. In afew years you will produce a large pot like the one shown in the last photo.Except for a lager flower size it is identical to its namesake. From Brazil comes the lovely Hippeastrum aulicum var. robustum. Also called "Lily of the Palace", this regal Hippeastrum lives in rainforests, where it grows as an epiphyte in trees. Its big, scarlet and green blossoms sit atop 18 inch tall stems. This rare robustum subspecies is, as the name suggests, very robust. It also happens to be easy to grow.The plant is almost evergreen, shedding its leaves each Summer, and replacing them shortly after. Even without blooms it is very ornamental, with lu...sh, full foliage. There is no need to "force" the bulb, since it doesn't have a long dormancy. These bold blooms are 6 inches across, and there are usually 2 of them per scape, but occasionally more. They are overlaid with intricate, crimson veins, and have a lime green star in the center. This is a true species, not a cultivated hybrid. It makes offsets fairly readily, which you may separate. Feel free to cross-breed it with other Hippeastrums to create new hybrids.It comes from a mild climate in Brazil, with temperatures similar to San Diego. It can tolerate heat, but it prefers cool nights if days are hot. Despite growing as an epiphyte in trees in the wild, it grows well in a pot. A loose, airy medium is best. A typical mix is 1 part fine grade orchid bark, 1 part pumice or perlite, and 1 part coir fiber or peat. Keep the soil evenly moist (but not soggy). Filtered sun seems to be the best. Some protection from strong afternoon sun is needed. It also needs protection from frost. Temperatures above 45 degrees F (7C) are best, and over about 40 humidity.This auction is for a 2 year-old bulb, which is about 1 inch wide (2.5 cm). Thi...s uniquely vibrant shade of pink is almost neon, all the more mesmerising for its exquisite pattern of stripes and spots, set against intense cerise-pink stamens Hippeastrum cardenasii is endemic to the mountains of Bolivia at a moderate elevation of 1500m. The ideal temperature range for this species is nights above 12C (55F) and days below 30C (86F), but it will probably tolerate higher temperatures if kept sheltered from direct sun or cooler if kept dry in winter (protect from frost). Knowing how deep to plant your Hippeastrum species is considered a significant factor in their health and blooming potential H. cardenasii likes to have a bit of its neck exposed. This species' leaves, flowers and roots are more delicate than many Hippeastrum species but it isn't difficult to grow. It does produce offsets, but it is slow to do so. Depending on your conditions this species may be deciduous in winter regardless, water should be reduced during cool weather. I only post pictures of my own plants. I would guess that it is about 1-2 years away from flowering. Dormant in the winter when it needs to be dry.
