The bookends feature a cool design motif featuring a personification of science - in the form of a medieval monk-looking figure hunched over, studying his books. Applied bronzed finish on the figure against a brown background, with the word "Science" below. One bookend has a bit of wear on the word "science" and both are basically missing their bottom felting and nubs - otherwise... very clean and appealing with great subject matter. Aronson 1869-1940)Louis V. Aronson registered his first patent for electroplating metal in the mid 1880's. He sold that patent to raise money to form his business The Art Metal Company in NYC. The Ronson Art Metal Works was one of the most prolific and creative of all art metal bookend producers. In 1915..., he copyrighted his first pair of bookends and by 1936, he had over 150 copyrighted. His bookend production subsided in the 1930's. It is a pair of bookends depicting two monks in red habits reading their office. These are vintage1950s in age, no marks on them as to exact place of origin ormanufacture. Each stands approx 7 12 tall on black felt protectedbases approx. 4 12 across. The bases and details such as thehabit rosaries and faces are nicely gilded. Beautiful craftsmanship on this piece Works as a bookend - but is only one, is still great piece to have. The book Bible he is reading actually swivels, colors are sharp. Monk is sitting down, the rosary beads are made of nail heads, the Cross is another piece attached to the wood. Great details on monk's face. Finish of wood feels like a thin layer of lacquer.
