I have owned over 40 china sailor and marine photo albums and NEVER have I seen one this good. the range of subject matter is vast with street scenes of hong kong and Shanghai and Cheefo as well every day life of sailors and natives of china including many un published Sino - Japanese war photos and much much more The real bonus is the owner of the album was the ships cartoonist for the ships newspaper of the USS Houston and he titled and captioned nearly every photo There are some fantastic tre...asures here and I know this album would net someone 3-4k by breaking it up but I will not do that to the history his man recorded in his beautifully done album. There are over 500 (I counted 510) ALL HINGED pictures and not glued 98 ALL CHINA only one or two pages are the PI the rest is ALL CHINA -- Yangtze river pics along with others of the Great Wall, Street Scenes, Girls, Locals, Blind children (that the sailors marines adopted), Every day life of both Sailors and locals as well as some really fantastic battle and war time pictures including some of the S.V.C (Shanghai Vols Corps) on the international bridge and FAR too much to accurately describe and nearly ALL CAPTIONED and nearly all with hand done professional cartoons The images and album are in wonderful condition with nice bright images and beautiful brown leather DRAGON Album with retaining strap still in place and only a few pictures missing from a few pages and by the captions, they were personal pictures of the owner himself that he must have given to family or other veterans and do not affect the overall history of the album itself. I have added lots of photos and have not really scratched the surface of the contents of this album Buyer to pay 20.00 for USA and 50.00 overseas shipping. I do not have a BUY IT NOW PRICE, this album will go to end of auction, thanksOn Jul-24-19 at 16:10:31 PDT, seller added the following information: Over 100, 000, 000 served. OLD HONG KONG PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM circa late 1890sA Rare early photograph album from Hong Kong packed full of early Hong Kong Chinese interest photographs depicting way of life in the streets, hills and rivers of Old Hong Kong in the late 19th century. Many of these photographs have the Peak in the distance or are of Peak interest. The Peak was where the ruling Colonial Classes lived and today this area still houses Hong Kong's richest people. It would appear by the chinese album, the english hand ...annotations and the differing quality and production of each shot that this was a Westerners album on a late 19th century trip to Hong Kong and the photographs were annotated on that trip at the time of being tipped into the album. It is of concertina type with photographs on either side of the leaf. It is bound in late nineteenth century dark red traditional chinese manufactured lacquer boards with original raised gilt illustration to front board peony and black leaf hand painted illustration to rear board. Several of the concertina leaves have come loose but are still present. The album could be quite easily repaired by a bookbinder but we have decided to leave that to the succesful purchaser. One photograph missing. Most images are between 5-6" x 4". The list of photographs is as follows with each of the Westerners annotations listed below. The comments in brackets are what we can see in the photograph or any further evidence of location or comments of interest etc etc. 1) Pirates awaiting execution (five pirates in front of largely Chinese Militia some with chinese lettering to the front of their tunics wearing Chinese conical hats douli and armed with rifles.2) Race Course Hong Kong Built in the Happy Valley. So primitive in this photograph compared to the high rises of today. 3) Portion of Peak can see the Peak Road and a few very Colonial houses one under construction with scaffolding4) Queen's Road - Central locals near building with scaffolding. Obviously on Southern end of the Queen's Road near Pedder Street as you can clearly see Pedder Street Clock Tower which was built in 1862 and sadly demolisthed in 1913) 5) Chinese Woman (mild lightening to edges of image) clearly showing off her bound feet rested on a footstool - one foot in tiny ornamental shoe - the other naked showing effects of early binding. Wearing Chinese silk kimono and seated on western chair with silk fabric6) Chinese boys at Chow eight boys approximately 4-8 years of age eating Chow7) Pirates cut in pieces not a nice picture with one headless with head beside and another cut into small pieces8) Barbers three street barbers cutting hair of youngish ladies - two of the barbers have very long hair which is not tied up (improper) - rickshaws in background and a few locals 9) Peak Mt Austin Bks Mount Austin Barracks located on Mt Austin Road views of Mount Austin in background. Built as a hostelhotel in about 1890 it offered and bathroom for every bedroom which was rare at that time. It was a failure and used as a barracks from the mid 1890s onwards until it was destroyed in the second world war. 10) Kowloon City originally a Chinese military fort - the wall up the hill is clearly visible - this image has particularly good definition and you can see how sparsely occupied it is compared to today - approximately 700 people. The Convention for Extension agreement with Britiain did not include Kowloon City and Chinese officials were allowed to be kept here as long as they didn't interfere with British defence. British officials thought that they did and invaded in 1898 to find it nearly empty with only 150 residents. The British didn't really concern itself with Kowloon City for the next few decades afterwards - the Qing Dynasty ended in 1912 leaving the city to the Britsh11) Chinese Joss House the english phrase for a place of Worship where joss sticks were burnt inside and out. This looks like a fairly provincial joss house at the foot of a mountain12) Peak Flagstaf

In 1918, he joined Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang. Shortly after Sun Yat-sen had begun to reorganize the Nationalist Party along Soviet lines, Chiang visited the Soviet Union in 1923 to study Soviet institutions, especially the Red Army. Moscow supported him until 1927, when he finally broke with the Communists. Commander-in-Chief of the revolutionary army since 1925, he had meanwhile launched a massive Nationalist campaign against the northern warlords. This drive ended only in 1928, when his forces entered Beijing, the capital.qA new central government under the Nationalists, with Chiang at its head, was then established at Nanjing, farther south. In December 1936, Chiang was seized by one of his generals who believed that Chinese forces should concentrate on fighting the Japanese instead of the communists. Chiang was held captive for some two weeks, and the Sian (Xian) Incident, as it became known, ended after he agreed to form an alliance with the communists against the Japanese invaders. In 1937, the mounting conflict between the two countries erupted into war (Sino-Japanese War). For more than four years China fought alone until it was joined by the Allies, who with the exception of the Soviet Union declared war on Japan in 1941. Chinas reward was an honored place among the victors as one of the Big Four.aBut internally Chiangs government showed signs of decay, which multiplied as it resumed the struggle against the communists after the Japanese surrendered to the United States in 1945. Civil war recommenced in 1946 by 1949 Chiang had lost continental China to the communists, and the Peoples Republic of China was established. War with Japan broke out in 1937, and Chiang was compelled to end his military campaigns against the Communists and form an alliance with them against the Japanese invaders. He resumed the struggle against the Communists after the Japanese surrendered to the United States in 1945. Civil war recommenced in 1946 by 1949 Chiang had lost continental China to the Communists. Chiang moved to Taiwan with the remnants of his Nationalist forces and continued to lead the government.f Photograph SignedtChiang Kai-shekin Chinese charactersimage, 3.5 inches by 4.75 inches3.75 inches by 5.75 inches overallstamped on versoPHOTO BY HU CHUNG HSIENin Chinese and English Click Here and See All My Current eBay ListingsFor those who use 3rd party authenticators: Guaranteed to receive fullcertificationif submitted to JSA or PSADNA at buyer's expense In 2011, Herman Darvick appeared on the 1775 Almanacepisode of PBS's History Detectives as the handwriting expert If you go to www.pbs.orgopbhistorydetectivesinvestigation1775-almanac, you can see the entire "1775 Almanac" episodeI was the handwriting expert contacted in the "1775 Almanac" episode on the PBS series "History Detectives" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. WELCOMETO SALLYS DIARIES: Upfor auction today is a fabulous WWII photo album. I dont know thename of the man who originally owned this album but it so historicalin so many ways. There 330 original photos, 40 souvenir type photos, along with 2 large photos and a few smaller photo postcards and thosewere taken by Alaska photographer, T. Davis. Most of the photos areof an area in China and then Alaska. I think most of them are blankon the back with no handwritten identification, but then again I onl...ychecked about 10. However on one there was the handwritteninscription that said, Here is a shot of me and my dog Jumpy.I named her that because she is so jumpy and lively. Tientsin China.February 47 There are a lot that also have USMC on thetanks. There are also some very sad photos, at least 10, showingsome very gruesome scenes of dead Asian men on the beach. One seemsto have been shot in the head. Iwould say that the first several pages have the photos from China andthere are about 110 of those. Then the Alaska photos begin, at leastI think the photos showing the ships and the men sailing on them, arewhen the crew is heading to Alaska but I cant say that for sure. There are about 150 of the Alaska photos. Now Im not positiveabout either of the locations but everything seems to point to thedirection. Including a newspaper clipping I found on one of thepages, and I quoteArcticIce Floes Halt Point Barrow Fleet. Point Barrow, Alaska. Aug. 3rd.An eight ship navy convoys race to bring a years supplies tothe top of the North American continent was blocked today, at leasttemporarily, by the grinding arctic ice pack. Dependent on the 42, 000tons of cargo carried by the fleet are the navys oil explorationbases and native village on the upper rim of Alaska. The narrowArctic sea channel was sealed by north winds yesterday, less than twoweeks after the latest breakup since 1938. Mostof the photos are placed on the album pages with their corner mountsand can be easily removed. Each page measures about 10 x 12 andthe photos vary in sizes.
